The Original Salty Dogs Jazz Band
In New Orleans
Original Salty Dogs
- The Salty Dogs began to stir in 1947, on the West Lafayette campus of
Purdue University, in Indiana. A couple of early names were applied to the
ad hoc student group that formed around a few jazz lovers who wanted to
meet sympathetic, souls on campus and informally discuss jazz, perhaps to
jam together. After the Cary Jazz Club, it became the Purdue Jazz Society,
and soon found that some of it prime movers leaned toward New Orleans jazz
so, after some research and consultation among their members, the group
dubbed itself the Original Peerless Jazz Society, and thanks to an
exclamation heard on a recording of Salty Dog by the Art Hodes band a name
was found that would stick. And so began a twenty-year run for this campus
band which fearlessly took on engagements wherever they could be found
sometimes locally, sometimes at other college campuses, and notable at
established jazz-oriented taverns in and around Chicago. |
